Santu de Silva

After earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics at the Peradeniya University in Sri Lanka, I traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to earn the M.A. in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 1983, while I taught close to a 2/3 load.

My first full-time appointment was at Lycoming College, where I continue to teach Mathematics, principally the basic Calculus sequence, Real Analysis, Geometry, Differential Equations, and Numerical Analysis.

Interests

In addition to Mathematics, I am also interested in music, principally the music of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Wagner and Dvorak, as well as certain British (Gibbons, Dowland, Byrd, Purcell, Vaughan-Williams, Elgar), and French composers (Franck, Faure, Ravel, Debussy), as well as Copland, Bernstein, and Leroy Anderson.  I also enjoy listening to the music of the 60s and the 70s (The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, Simon & Garfunkel, the Seekers, and The Mamas & the Papas.  I also read a lot, including authors Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, as well as J. T. Rowland (Harry Potter)

Why should I study Mathematics -- an opinion
